Information

Built in 1820 originally as a private residence, this building was eventually converted into the Loats Female Orphan Asylum in 1886. In 1959, the Historical Society of Frederick County moved to the building and it has served as the foundation’s headquarters since then including amenities like a museum and research center for preservation. The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. This elegant Federal Flemish bond brick structure stands on an elevated basement. Marble steps lead to the elevated central doorway with an arched Federal style door surround with freestanding Doric columns and a fan lite topped by a marble lintel. Windows with shutters and thin headers punctuate the first and second floors. Three dormer windows pierce the metal roof above a dentilled cornice.
