DeLuca Biochemistry Building (420 Henry Mall) built in 1912, has been this department's home from the start. Scientists working in this department made many important discoveries. Some of the discoveries include:
1. Vitamin A in butterfat and cod liver oil and vitamin B complex in milk whey by Elmer V. McCollum.
2. The process of creating vitamin D by irradiation (by Harry Steenbock) ending rickets, a debilitating disease in children--this lead to establishing the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.
3. Iodized salt to prevent goiters by E. B. Hart and Steenbock.
4. Isolation and identification of the B vitamin, niacin, by Conrad Elvehjem and Frank Strong, which eliminated pellagra.
5. Coumadin (Warfarin) discovered by Carl P. Link and others, a blood thinner for heart patients and a rat poison.
