Information

There is perhaps no more important resource on a college campus than the IT (information technology) center. College education relies heavily on the use of technology. Students are expected to use computers to check their email regularly, register for classes, complete homework assignments, and find research resources. In some cases, entire classes are taught online, without students and instructors ever meeting face-to-face. In fact, University of Wyoming offers distance learning degrees at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels. Clearly, computer technology is absolutely vital for the 21st century college student. Thus, the University of Wyoming has an entire building dedicated to ensuring that students, faculty, and staff can receive help with any technical issues they may have.

The presence of the IT building is a reminder that we have all become cyborgs, in a sense. Students are rarely seen without a laptop, tablet, or smart phone. They are using these high-tech prosthetics on a daily basis, whether for school, work, or social interactions. Moreover, they all have digital identities, whether through email, Facebook, or even their WyoWeb accounts. This is perhaps one of the most importance aspects of the contemporary posthuman identity. We are no longer confined to our physical place. Rather, we can be present in various digital spaces while never leaving the couch. Our bodies simply cannot contain us.
