The library is named after James A. Cannavino, who was a long-time Trustee and former Chairman of the Board. The library was developed as part of the worldwide Digital Library Initiative launched by the IBM Corporation. The purpose of this initiative was to provide open physical and digital access to books, periodicals, works of art, film, music, and rare manuscripts. It was built as a model for academic libraries of the new century. The library serves not only as an electronic teaching and service center, but it also acts as a hub of an electronic network linking all parts of the Marist campus to libraries and databases throughout the world. The library hosts numerous study areas and quiet rooms for research, conferences, and collaborative work. The library also hosts the Archives and Special Collections rooms and a multimedia language center on the third floor. There is also a Starbucks (with seating) on the main floor where students can get something to drink or eat and have a place to chat before or after their studies.
