Multifunctional phone booth replacements with 2 55" digital displays, WiFi, and tablet. Plans to deploy 7,500 across New York city.
LinkNYC is an infrastructure project designed to create a network to cover New York City with free Wi-Fi service. The plan was announced by the mayor's office on November 17, 2014, and the installation of the first kiosks, or "Links," started in late 2015. The Links replace the city's network of 9,000 to 13,000 payphones, a contract for which expired in October 2014. In 2014, the was awarded to the CityBridge consortium, which comprises Qualcomm, Titan, Control Group, and Comark.
The project brings free, encrypted, gigabit wireless internet coverage to the five boroughs by converting old payphones into Wi-Fi hotspots where free phone calls could also be made. There will be 7,500 Links installed in the New York metropolitan area, making the system the world's fastest and most expansive.
