Light Installation: Candy Canes and Snowflakes
Candy Canes and snowflakes like the trees along Redmond Way. Read below for some interesting facts about candy canes and snowflakes and their connection to winter traditions.
Candy Canes: Did you know the first candy cane was made 350 years ago? Legend has it that in 1670, the cane shaped candy became historical when a choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany bent the sugar-sticks into canes to appear as shepherd's hooks. The all-white candy canes were given out to children who attended the ceremonies. This became a popular tradition, and eventually the practice during church ceremonies which spread all over Europe and America. How many lighted candy canes can you find?
Snowflakes: The snowflake is the one of the most iconic symbols representing cold weather and has also become a popular image used during the holiday winter season. Did you know snowflakes are six-sided prisms (hexagonal pattern) and that no two snowflakes are exactly alike? Scientists say that at the molecular level, the chance of two identical snowflakes is so astronomically low that it is considered impossible.
