Information

At the turn of the 20th century, the first library in Millgrove was established by Rev. Judson Kelly and James Stewart, a school teacher. It was located in the school house on Millgrove Side Road near the Grindstone Creek, and consisted of four hundred books. Mr. Stewart employed simple censorship - when he found the young ladies reading too many love stories, he put the books in a box and nailed the lid down.

When the 1914 schoolhouse was opened on the 5th Concession, the library was allowed space in a very small attic room. Climbing the steep stairs to reach it was a challenge to patrons. By 1969 the now 8,000 books needed more space. Land was purchased from the United Church, and on the property a modern spacious building was erected. Moving the books from the attic room of the school was accomplished with a little rural ingenuity. A hay elevator was wheeled up to the window and the boxes of books were easily transported to the ground.

The Millgrove branch of the Hamilton Public Library officially closed November of 2015 along with the old Waterdown branch in preparation for the opening of the new community complex opened in Waterdown. The 15,000 square foot facility includes the Waterdown branch of the Hamilton Public Library, a Senior Centre, the City’s Municipal Service Centre, Flamborough Archives, and Flamborough Information & Community Services. Millgrove is now served by a Bookmobile stop at the Millgrove Public School.
