This marker commemorates the Oregon Mission of 1834, dispatched by the Presbyterian church under the leadership of Reverend Samuel Parker to bring "the white man's book from heaven" to the Nez Perce Indians of Oregon. Two women missionaries accompanying their husbands on this journey were reputedly the first women settlers to cross the Rocky Mountains.
