Away to the right the sandwich mountain range is visible. IF you look through the lowest valley of the range, you can see one more mountain, still further away, framed very nicely in that valley. That mountain is about 50 miles from here and is mount Washington. Mount washingotn is the highest peak north of the Carolinas and easy of the missisissippi, rising 6288 feet above sea level. It’s legendary for bad weather and high winds. iN april of 1934, the highest wind velocity on the surface of the earth was recorded at the weather observatory on the summit. The iwnd velocity reached 231 miles per hour, when the measuring equipment was blown away. Access to the summit is provided from the east by the auto road, from the west by the cog railway, and by a network of numerous hiking trails including the Appalachian Trail.
