Situated on the river IJssel, near the ferry in Deventer, is a neoclassical 19th century building that has had many different functions over the past 160 years. From casino to bowling alley, from discotheque to Chinese restaurant, sadly all without great success. Since 2007 it has been used as a hotel, a purpose which has proven the best way to showcase the splendour of the building.
The history of the IJsselhotel dates back to 1862. It was initially a coffee house and was called Het Wapen van Deventer. The busy traffic between Amsterdam, Deventer, and Hamburg had to pass the IJssel and generated a lot of customers. This led to it being known locally as 'Little Scheveningen’.
