If you continue westward on Market Street toward Fred Jackson Way you will walk by the neighborhood's iconic Rancho Market. The murals covering the walls of the Market are called “Fabric of Unity” and use vibrant colors to show the neighborhood's history, diversity, and culture. Some patterns on the mural represent fabrics of different communities living in the neighborhood: Mexican, Nigerian, Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese. The artist Richard Muro Salazar, a xhicano individual from Richmond, designed and installed the mural. Muro uses art as a medium for social justice and activist involvement. He produced the final design for this mural. He also depicts historical elements such as the Kaiser shipyards, jazz culture, and the Black Panthers in the design. Can you spot any of these elements in the mural?
Artist Richard Muro Salazar worked with community members to create the mural to support the neighborhood with what he describes as 'visual healing', as he stated in an interview: "Art can make a space feel more inviting." It can teach people about the rich history of the area that isn’t talked about in schools.
Above are 'before and after' photos of the Rancho Market. What a collorful addition to the neighborhood!
