Now occupied by a retail shopping centre, this is the site of the original Mornington Railway. The coordinates are placing you at a historic marker.
The Mornington branch line opened on the 10th September 1889 and operated upto the Second World War. Once the war ended the service resumed and closed in 1978 for a brief time withbus services replacing trains. A railmotor service was then established in 1978 after community outcry but in 1981 the line was closed for good.
In 1984 the Mornington Railway Preservation Society inc was formed to run a steam hauled passenger service from Baxter to Mornington. An Order in Council was granted 1in 1991 and efforts commenced to preserve the railway site.
Unfortunatly the State government sold the land between Nepean Highway up to and including the station site to private developers. A shopping centre was constructed in 2000 and various other developents took place along the easment, including a town centre bypassroad and an extension to the local hospital.
Part of the original easment remains undeveloped and forms a linear park by the hospital staff carpark.
