The Boulevard of Montmartre on a Winter Morning, Camille Pissarro, 1897.
Medium: Oil Paint
Style: Impressionist
This painting shows Pissarro's view from his room at the Grand Hôtel de Russie in Paris. Many other Impressionist artists, like Monet, were abandoning cityscapes, but Pissarro embraced them. He did 14 paintings of this exact view during different seasons and times of the day.
Though this was painted at the end of the Impressionist Era, it perfectly reflects the ideas of the movement. Pissarro uses cool light, muted colors, and a stippled brush to create the effect of a cold, foggy winter morning in Paris.
