On the right are the rocks known as the witches. This area was once an island complete with soil, trees and other vegetation. Exposure to strong northwest winds and constant wave action has eroded the land away, leaving the rock behind. The witches is one of the most treacherous areas on the lake, mainly because it’s much larger than the visible rocks, and includes a number of other rock piles that lurk just beneath the surface. If you look further around, you can see a ring of navigation buoys and warning signs encircling an area about a third of a mile across. In spite of all that warning, a season rarely passes without at least one boater trying to go through the middle, usually with unfortunate results.
