On this tour, we passed through a few vacant lots. Vacant lots are more than just abandoned places, they are opportunities to create new and exciting spaces. One example is the Peace and Harmoney Community Garden we visited.
Community-maintained gardens help feed their communities by growing and providing healthy food. It also brings neighborhood members together through volunteering and having fun in the garden. Another example of this is Urban Tilth, which we explored in a previous point of interest. In the video above, Adam Boisvert, Deputy Director of Urban Tilth, speaks about the importance of urban farming and what can be done to get started. For the full interview, please click here.
What possibilities can you imagine for reclaiming our vacant lots? If you're curious about how you can help transform this vacant lot into a green space or community garden, you can start by emailing Tania Pulido of the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors about your questions and visions. The folks at Urban Tilth are also always open and happy to help our community with the process!
