Accra is a vibrant and historically significant city on the Gulf of Guinea. It has played a crucial role in the history of Ghana, from being a center of trade during colonial times to becoming the political and economic capital of the country after independence in 1957.
The social history of Accra involves the diverse cultures
and communities that have shaped the city over the years.
This includes the indigenous Ga founders of the city as well as various ethnic groups such as the Akan, Ewe, Mole Dagbani and others from beyond Ghana such as the Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, European, Indian and Lebanese.
The city has witnessed urbanization, migration, and cultural exchange, contributing to its rich and dynamic social fabric.
