The African Methodist Episcopal Church, located here was built in 1850 and founded by a freedom seeker who settled in Madison in 1836. The importance of this church building in the early African American community cannot be overstated. The church was often the center of the African American Community and served as a school for the children. It is owned and operated by Historic Madison, Inc.
