Charlotte County Court House

Punta Gorda, Florida 33950, United States

Created By: SW Florida Walking Tours

Punta Gorda used to be part of DeSoto county. In 1921, DeSoto was subdivided into Charlotte, Glades, Hardee, and Highlands counties. At that time, Punta Gorda was chosen as the capital of Charlotte county and the courthouse was built. Originally the jail was on the second floor. It was an improvement over the two-person lock-up that had served the town for 40 years. Today the second floor is used for juvenile court. The historic court house retains some original elements including doors, tiles and flooring.
