The Stewart Park trailhead is one of six on the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Completed in 2010, the Trail has had a transformative effect on Stewart Park, bringing more and more visitors to enjoy the park’s lakefront promenade before continuing down the eight-mile trail bordering the Cayuga Lake inlet from Stewart Park to the Allan H. Treman State Marine Park. It is a popular destination for joggers, cyclists, and walkers both for recreation and transportation.
Take a moment to read the trailhead’s interpretive panel, then turn your gaze out to the lake. You are looking at the location of an old steamboat landing, humming with activity as the advent of the Erie Canal in the 1820’s transformed the southern end of Cayuga Lake into a busy shipping port. Head along the trial and you'll find another panel with details all about the area's role in the Erie Canal, as well as a map of the park, both installed in 2023.
