Hannibal Square is Winter Park's historic African-American community. The neighborhood was established by the city's founders in 1881 to provide homes for African-Americans who worked on the railroad and in the homes of the wealthy white northerners that Chase and Chapman sought to attract to the area. Although Florida and Winter Park remained deeply segragated until the 1960's, these jobs brought both stability and relative prosperity to the community.
The Hannibal Square Heritage Center was founded in 2001, through a partnership between the Winter Park Community Center and the Crealdé School of Art. The founders, including Crealdé executive director and photographer Peter Schreyer and Community Center director Ron Moore, felt the need to preseve the history and significance of the Hannibal Square area as it underwent rapid redevelopment and gentrification.
